Cookie banner on Maple & Wick
  • Accept and Reject are the same size and style.
  • Reject tells Shopify the visitor declined.
  • Customise lets visitors choose by category.
  • Closing the banner is not consent; it asks again next visit.
An example of the cookie banner a visitor would see. Example store and wording; you write your own in the app.

The problem it fixes

Cookie, age and notice banners often come from separate apps, each with its own look and script, and many make declining harder than accepting. This is one banner that does all three.

  1. 01

    One app for three banners

A cookie banner, an age gate and a custom notice are all rules in one place. Set them up once, in the order you want visitors to meet them.

Rules for cookie consent, age gate and custom notice; up to 10 rules per store, the first match for each type is used.

  2. 02

Saying no is as easy as saying yes

Accept and Reject sit side by side with the same weight. A visitor who rejects is recorded as declined in Shopify's own consent record, so Shopify's pixels follow that choice.

Reject calls Shopify's Customer Privacy API with marketing, analytics, preferences and sale of data all set to false.

  3. 03

It looks like your store, not an add-on

Colours, fonts and corners come from your theme. You can adjust the accent, corners, font, light or dark surface and top or bottom position in the theme editor.

Shared storefront style reads your theme's colour and font settings, with block settings in the theme editor to override them.

  4. 04

Built to narrow by place, later

On Free, every rule applies to every visitor. Country and region rules are built for the planned paid plan; if the app cannot tell where a visitor is, such a rule applies, so nobody is skipped.

Region from Shopify's Customer Privacy API; on Free, targeting is held back and rules apply to all visitors.

  5. 05

    Your store keeps working

The banner never shows on checkout. If something goes wrong in it, the banner removes itself and your store carries on. It adds no third-party scripts.

Skips checkout pages, fails open on any error, and loads two small deferred scripts only when a rule is live.

How the cookie banner works

  1. 1

    Turn on the app embed

Open the theme editor, switch on Cartkept Consent under App embeds and save. Nothing is written into your theme's code.

  2. 2

    Add your first rule

Choose Cookie banner, Age gate or Custom notice. The wording is ready in 7 languages, and you can edit your own message.

  3. 3

    Choose who sees it

On Free a rule shows to everyone; picking countries and regions is planned for the paid plan. Put rules in the order you want: for each type, the first match is used.

  4. 4

    Check my storefront

The app looks at your home page and tells you whether the banner and your rules are really there.

What it watches for you

  • Is the banner on your storefront?

Check my storefront loads your home page and looks for the app embed and the number of rules it holds. It tells you if the embed is off or out of date.

  • Will Shopify hold tracking back?

A banner can only hold tracking back where your Shopify customer privacy setting is Collected after consent. The app warns you in the theme editor and on Home if a region is set otherwise.

  • Will the age gate lock you out?

In the theme editor and in theme previews the age gate is not a blocker and can be closed. Search crawlers and page-speed tools are not shown it.

Is it for you?

The job it does

Show visitors a cookie banner, an age check or a notice that looks like my store, without a pile of separate apps or a slower page.

A good fit if

  • Shopify stores that want a cookie banner that looks like their theme.
  • Stores that sell age-restricted goods and want an age check on the storefront.
  • Stores that want declining to be as easy as accepting.
  • Merchants who want one app, not a banner app plus an age app plus a notice app.

Not the right app if

  • Stores that need a record of each visitor's consent; the app keeps none.
  • Stores that need proof of age; a check in the browser is a courtesy, not proof.
  • Anyone looking for legal advice; check your own rules.

Why not do it by hand

Separate apps for cookies, age checks and notices each add their own script and their own look. This is one app embed with one set of rules, styled from your theme, with no third-party requests. Rejecting is a real choice, passed on to Shopify.

Why it will be worth paying for

A paid plan is planned for country and region rules, anonymous accept and reject counts, and more storefront languages. It would save you managing different banners by hand for different markets. Free stays.

Questions before you install

Does the cookie banner follow the law for my country?

We cannot tell you that, and Cartkept does not give legal advice. The app gives you the controls: a banner with equal Accept and Reject, rules you write, and a choice passed on to Shopify (rules by country are planned for the paid plan). Check what your own rules require.

What does it store about my visitors?

Nothing. We store your rules, your style, your plan flag and the result of your last storefront check. A visitor's choice lives in Shopify's own consent cookie and in their browser, and no request goes from their browser to us. The app asks for no access scopes.

What if it breaks, or slows my store?

It never shows on checkout, and if anything goes wrong in the banner it removes itself so your store keeps working. The storefront scripts total under 8 KB gzipped, load without holding up your page and call no third party. With no rule live, the page gets one empty hidden element.
